Alicia Vikander cast as Lara Croft in new ‘Tomb Raider’ films

Alicia Vikander, star of Ex Machina and The Danish Girl, will officially be taking over the iconic role previously played on the big screen by Angelina Jolie. Directed by Roar Uthaug, the new films are set to be a prequel series exploring the origins of the British archaeologist-adventurer. This interestingly mirrors Square Enix’s 2011 reboot of the Tomb Raider video game franchise.

Other actresses including Star Wars’ Daisy Ridley were reportedly in the running for the role. Vikander is rapidly rising through the ranks of stardom in Hollywood having already won an Oscar for her role as Gerda in The Danish Girl. This looks set to continue as she stars alongside Matt Damon in Jason Bourne this summer.

Further details about the film are yet to be revealed.
